High-end film scanning has traditionally been defined by drum scanners and Imacon (Flextight) systems. These tools set the benchmark for decades and still produce excellent results when operated well. Today, however, capture technology has evolved.
For the large-format, fine-art printing we specialize in, we use a PhaseOne camera-based film capture system. This choice is deliberate and based on control, consistency and long-term image quality.
True RAW Capture
- Unlike traditional scanners, our PhaseOne system captures film as a true RAW file with no baked-in tone curve, fixed colour interpretation, sharpening or noise reduction applied at capture.
- The file remains sensor-linear until we make intentional, reversible adjustments in Capture One.
Single-Shot Stability
- Drum scanners and virtual drum scanners rely on precision mechanical movement. Even small mechanical tolerances can introduce subtle artifacts that only become visible in final prints.
- PhaseOne capture is a single, static exposure with no moving sensor and no line-by-line sampling. This eliminates motion-related artifacts and provides stable, repeatable capture.
Tonal Smoothness for Fine Art Printing
- Traditional scanners output 16-bit TIFF files with tonal decisions partially made during the scanning process itself.
- With PhaseOne RAW capture, tonal mapping happens later and adjustments remain fully reversible.
- Smooth gradients are easier to preserve—especially important in skies, studio backdrops and softly lit scenes where any micro-banding will show in print.
Resolution in Real Terms
- What matters isn’t advertised DPI—it’s usable detail without artifacts. PhaseOne capture resolves film grain naturally, avoids interpolation artifacts and produces clean, highly printable files.
- For medium and large format film, this approach delivers detail that translates exceptionally well to modern pigment ink printing.
A Modern, Sustainable Workflow
- High-end drum and Imacon scanners are no longer manufactured. Parts, service and calibration expertise are increasingly limited.
- Our PhaseOne system is actively supported, uses current software and fits a modern colour-managed workflow. This allows us to maintain predictable quality over time.
We respect the role drum scanners and Imacon systems played in defining professional film scanning. Our choice to use PhaseOne capture is about selecting the approach that best supports fine-art print quality, tonal control, consistency and long-term reliability. The result is a capture process designed for today’s expectations and tomorrow’s prints.

About borders: Prices are based on image size. Border preferences (we recommend at least 1" for framing) can be specified when you upload your files.

About canvas prints: All prices include a 2" gallery wrap border on all sides and your choice of matte or glossy varnish.
Art Reproduction
High-resolution capture of original artwork
We capture exactly what is visible in your original art using our high-resolution Phase One camera. You'll receive a 16-bit TIFF for archival use and an 8-bit JPG for web. Turnaround time is 5 business days.
If you plan to print reproductions of your artwork, we can create a custom color profile matched to your chosen paper. This ensures the printed reproduction is as close as possible to your original. Profiling involves printing test targets on your selected paper and measuring the results. Papers with optical brighteners (Hot Press, Cold Press) require additional testing and are priced accordingly.

Art fulfillment shipping rates
For artists using our art fulfilment services, shipping costs are based on print size and destination. Enter your full print dimensions below including any borders.
Enter the FULL size of your print including any borders. If you've requested borders on your print (we recommend at least 1" for framing), include that in your dimensions. The calculator automatically adds 4" for protective tube padding.
All shipments include: Prints carefully wrapped in glassine and packaged with extra padding at either end, all customs and export documentation, fully trackable shipping with email notification.
Mounting
Archival substrate mounting for prints
Many prints need to be mounted on a substrate to ensure they lay flat and do not move or cockle over time with humidity changes. Depending on presentation, size, and budget, there are several archival options available.
Important: Dibond with Laminate and Float Mount presentations use Epson Premium Glossy paper exclusively. This is the only paper that properly adheres to the substrate and accepts the cold press laminate without silvering or surface separation.
